Simona Halep averted her eyes from the nagging voice at her shoulder and took a swig of water, either unable or unwilling to respond. It was all too familiar. Up a set and a break and serving for a trip to the semifinals of the 2017 Miami Open, she had unraveled, conceding a break to her opponent—Johanna Konta—and a tiebreaker two games later. Wimbledon will be a fresh test for Halep, and it likely won’t be forgiving; one challenge begets another, and the ghosts of collapses past are awaiting her in London. But for now, a player who was once implored by her coach to change is focused on keeping some things constant.

London: Romania’s Simona Halep swept into her first Wimbledon semi-final with a crushing 6-4, 6-0 victory over former finalist Sabine Lisicki on yesterday. Since losing in the Wimbledon second round last year, Halep has enjoyed a rapid rise up the rankings from 32nd 12 months ago to her current lofty position of third and now she stands on the verge of breaking new ground back in south-west London.
Historically, Halep had draws rigged against her at US Open and Wimbledon, was put against big hitters well positioned in WTA rankings from the very early rounds, before she had a chance to adapt and feel the ball and surroundings. This is a big factor: no well placed big hitters high in the rankings in the first week.
