Jan. 21, 2019.  Halep versus Williams in the round of 16 was a rare moment in tennis. It was a match in which the top-ranked player was also the decided underdog. Not only was Halep facing a formidable opponent with 23 major titles, seven of them in Melbourne alone, but she was also confronting someone who had dominated their career head-to-head matchups, winning eight times and losing just once. So it was hardly a shock that Williams ended up improving that record on Monday, rolling past the 27-year-old Halep by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 score. In the quarterfinals, Williams will now face seventh-seeded Karolina Plisk

Halep, meanwhile, entered her anticipated match with No. 16 Serena Williams, the reigning US Open runner-up and seven-time Australian Open champ, in full acknowledgment that her No. 1 seeding didn't necessarily equate to Williams' lifelong resume. And despite strong play on her end, the reigning French Open champion ended up proving herself right, falling to Serena after Williams saved three break points to hold for 3-all in their match's third set. With Halep knocked out, Williams is still positioned to pursue her 24th Grand Slam title, which would tie an all-time record. Here&

Serena wins Open thriller. How the tables can turn. Serena Williams returned from a mid-match slump to sink World No.1 Simona Halep in three sets on Rod Laver Arena. Halep bounced back from a 1-6 loss in the first set to take control of the match and send the contest to a thrilling decider. Williams, who dominated the match early on with her thunderous serve and powerful returns, began falling victim to Halep's superior court coverage as the 28-year-old found her groove.  She joins Mary Pierce and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the Class of 2019, which was announced Monday at the Australian Open. All three players won a pair of Grand Slam singles titles — one at Melbourne Park and the other at Roland Garros. Li retired in 2014 at age 32 because of recurring knee injuries.
