World number 2 and the second seed at Qatar Open in Doha Simona Halep had a good day in the office on Friday, beating the American qualifier CiCi Bellis 6-0 6-4 in an hour and 22 minutes (read more about the match HERE) to book her place in the semi-final. Still, we will not here in action against the 4th seed Garbine Muguruza as the Romanian decided to withdraw due to a foot injury. After her win over Bellis, Simona took an MRI and it revealed fluid and tendinitis and she decided to withdraw from Dubai and also from Doha next week, hoping to return at Indian Wells in March.  This was the third tournament for Halep in 2018, winning the title in Shenzhen and losing in that amazing final at the Australian Open to Caroline Wozniacki. Simona Halep pulled out of the Qatar Open with a right foot injury shortly after she reached the semi-final with a dominant 6-0 6-4 win over American qualifier Catherine Bellis on Friday. The Romanian world number two, who was playing her first event since losing in the Australian Open final last month, said she had been carrying the injury throughout the tournament and would also miss next week's Dubai Tennis Championships. "Definitely until Indian Wells I will not play anything. I will decide before the tournament if I will be able to play," Halep told a news conference. "

Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova will headline a jampacked second round of action in the Qatar Total Open.  Last meeting: 2018 Miami Open (Ostapenko won 7-6 7-6). Elina Svitolina’s off-court life has been of great interest in 2019 and she will need to put that to the side when she takes to the court in Doha. Since losing in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, the Ukrainian took an extended break and had no plans to play in Qatar before receiving a late wild card. Jelena Ostapenko will look to inflict another loss to Svitolina, but quite honestly, the Latvian has been a huge disappointment for the last six months. Prior to her win over Buzarnescu, the former French Open champion had won only on

Halep is all in—and that is why it’s so often been hard to witness her anguish. So it was good to see hard work rewarded today. But while we might look back and ponder the 6-1 score of the final set as an easy time of it, there’s rarely anything easy about watching Halep try to close out a match. Early on, Halep was searching for answers all over the court. Meanwhile, Stephens was dictating brilliantly. Once Stephens went up a set and 2-0, it seemed like Halep was slated once again to lose.  Halep’s case also wasn’t being helped by her utter lack of faith in her net game. Repeatedly, she’d open up the court but refused to come in, instead giving Stephens the chance to reset the point with high balls and even a number of mildly sliced forehands. Until early in the second set, Halep was looking like a terribly limited player. But I think what paid off most of all was Halep’s dedication, tenacity and fitness.
