It has finally been confirmed that the Belgian Thierry Van Cleemput is to be Simona Halep’s new coach. The 50-year-old Belgian had been spotted near to the Halep player box during her fourth-round loss to Serena Williams at the Australian Open – and had also been seen in her training sessions that week. Van Cleemput’s long-standing coaching agreement with his compatriot and ATP World No.22 David Goffin had come to an end during that tournament.  For his part, Van Cleemput responded: "I am no longer David's coach, but stay his friend. I feel that his best years are yet to come." Van Cleemput’s previous coaching engagements include working with two other fellow Belgians – Steve Darcis (2011-2012) and Olivier Rochus (1993-1997, 2011-2012) – and serving as the nation’s assistant Davis Cup captain between 2002 and 2005. Former World No.1 Simona Halep has hired Belgian Thierry Van Cleemput as her new coach. Halep's PR manager confirmed the news to WTA Insider. The pair, who were spotted working together last month at the Australian Open, will formally begin their partnership next week at the Qatar Total Open in Doha, which begins on February 11th.  Halep began her 2019 campaign with the intention of flying solo through the spring hardcourt season and, by her own admission, played far better than she might have expected at the Australian Open. With a shortened pre-season, no coach, and just one match before the first Slam of the season, Halep earned two tough wins over Kaia Kanepi, Sofia Kenin, and Venus Williams, before pushing Serena Williams to three tough sets in the Round of 16.

World number one Simona Halep, flying solo after parting ways with coach Darren Cahill, feels refreshed after a long lay-off to recover from a back injury but also concedes she has risked her Australian Open campaign with scant preparations. French Open champion Halep warmed up for her run to the final at Melbourne Park last year by winning the Shenzhen Open in southern China but has played only one match since September, a 6-4 6-4 defeat to Australia's Ashleigh Barty at the Sydney International on Wednesday.  "You really want to know?" Halep smiled, after being asked how she reacted. "I was at Nike taking my new shoes. When I saw the message, I was like, 'Okay, whatever. I just enjoy the moment with the shoes, then I'll think about the match'. That's it." Cahill quit Halep's team for "family reasons" and the Romanian said she would proceed without a coach for the first few months of the season.
