For the first time in 19 months, Maria Sharapova walked on court for a Grand Slam match, this time under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium to a warm reception on a cool Monday night. She wore a black dress and a look of determination, just as she did on the night in 2006 when she beat Justine Henin-Hardenne to win her only United States Open title. This was only a first-round match, but it had a marquee feel. Sharapova, the five-time Grand Slam champion who received a wild-card berth while still rebuilding her ranking after a suspension for drug use, was pitted against Simona Halep, the No. 2

Halep has the unfortunate distinction of losing 3 of the best Slam matches of 2017: To Ostapenko at RG, Konta at Wimbledon, Maria here.  In a de facto grand slam final, Maria Sharapova takes it in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The wildcard improves her record against Simona Halep to 7-0 and advances to the second round of the US Open, where she’ll play Hungary’s Timea Babos. Dare I say this match exceeded expectations? Sharapova came ready to play, with every tool in her arsenal on full blast tonight. Yes, she sprayed a bunch of errors. But that’s expected when playing her brand of tennis. Halep, the victim of an incredibly unlucky draw, suffers yet another disappointment and a slam-less season.

Maria Sharapova’s shocking 15-month doping ban ended back in April, but her return to the sport has been mired by injuries and disappointment, highlighted by her withdrawing from the Bank of the West Classic after just one match due to a forearm injury last month. For any rational observer, expectations for the world’s No. 146-ranked women’s player at this week’s US Open were tempered to say the least.  Sharapova upset No. 2 seed Romanian Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first round of the US Open and in her first Grand Slam appearance since the lengthy ban. The 30-year-old, who was able to compete in the final major of the year thanks to a wild-card exemption from the U.S. Tennis Association, moved well and showed no signs of injury en route to the surprising victory. STUTTGART, Germany — A day before Maria Sharapova was to play her first tennis match since being banned for doping, the debate about the Russian’s wild-card entry for the Porsche Grand Prix continued Tuesday. Sharapova has been awesome on clay since 2012 going 53-1 against women not named Serena. She used to hate playing on clay so I’m really impressed with how she’s been able to turn it around and become the best clay-court player in the women’s game. She’s had a habit of losing the 1st set then turning it around in the 2nd then steamrolling in the 3rd set. I think she’s on a mission today and she’s been the heavy favorite as soon as Serena got knocked out. Simona Halep has been the most consistent player throughout the tournament. Maria Sharapova is one of the veterans of women’s tennis these days and the 31-year-old Russian appreciates how much the game is changing. A new wave of younger players are going into their matches ready to attack at every chance and go for their shots, as Sharapova discovered in her 7-5, 6-4 victory over the 21-year-old Croatian, Donna Vekic. “You see it from the younger generation: there is no holding back,” Sharapova said. “From the perspective of coming into a tournament and just thinking that you might get a few rounds in to warm up is no longer the case.  Simona Halep swept aside Taylor Townsend, beating the American 6-3, 6-1 in just 68 minutes, while Garbine Muguruza beat Fiona Ferro, a French wild card, 6-4, 6-3. Rafael Nadal had to save four break points in his opening game against Argentina’s Guido Pella but was soon in control against the world No 78.

She then jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set but proceeded to lose five straight games as Halep won 6-4, forcing a decisive and final third set. Sharapova then jumped out to yet another 4-1 lead and put away Halep with a stunning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in what was a thrilling two-hour-and-44-minute match. Still, Maria Sharapova offered a tidy aphorism to sum up the formula that’s carried her to a third consecutive French Open final. “It’s not how you finish a first set,” the Russian said, “it’s how you finish the last set.” Right now, no one is a better closer than she is on clay. Nearing a second championship at Roland Garros, and fifth Grand Slam trophy overall, Sharapova gritted her way to yet another comeback victory, beating 18th-seeded Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the semifinals Thursday.  In Saturday’s final, the seventh-seeded Sharapova will face No. 4 Simona Halep, a 22-year-old Romanian who never before had been past the quarterfinals at a major. Halep turned in a much more straightforward victory than Sharapova, eliminating No. 28 Andrea Petkovic of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). “I have a lot of confidence in myself now,” said Halep, who a year ago was ranked only 57th.

However, a third double fault handed Halep another break point, and she took it, held through deuce to level in the eighth game as Sharapova’s racket grew reckless, before she brought the set to a close in just under an hour with yet another stunning forehand winner. She was 4-1 in the second set, two games away from the fairytale comeback – and then wobbled alarmingly.
