Simona Halep (Romanian pronunciation: [siˈmona haˈlep]; born 27 September 1991) is a Romanian professional tennis player. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranked her world No. 1 in singles on two separate occasions between 2017 and 2019. She reached the No. 1 ranking for the first time on October 9, 2017. On her second occasion, she held the ranking for 48 consecutive weeks. In total, she has been No. 1 for 64 weeks, which ranks tenth in the history of female tennis. Halep was the year-end No. 1

Former World No.1 Simona Halep has hired Belgian Thierry Van Cleemput as her new coach. Halep's PR manager confirmed the news to WTA Insider. The pair, who were spotted working together last month at the Australian Open, will formally begin their partnership next week at the Qatar Total Open in Doha, which begins on February 11th. Simona Halep got to this point with the help of her coach, Darren Cahill, a former tennis player himself who has been coaching a number of high-profile players since the early 2000s. Halep and Cahill had a bit of a falling out earlier this year, but they came back together in time for the French Open, and Halep says that this helped her to improve her attitude and make it to the final.  However, earlier this year, Cahill briefly quit as Halep’s coach. Simona Halep, the current World No.1, plans to start the 2019 season without a coach. The Romanian superstar says she wants to start the new season on her own terms after a shocking split with longtime coach Darren Cahill this winter. Cahill announced in early November that he needed to take a 12-month break from coaching in order to attend to family matters.  In their four years together, Cahill was able to coach Halep to back to back year-end No.1 finishes in 2017 and 2018 and to her first Grand Slam win in Roland Garros during the 2018 season.
