Simona Halep, the 26-year-old number one ranked female tennis player in the world, has just won the 2018 French Open. She defeated the 10th-seeded American Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday. Stephens, for her part, told reporters that the women’s finals trophy “looks good” on Halep, and that there is “no one else I’d rather lose to than the number one in the world.” Halep is the first Romanian to win a grand slam since 1978. Romanian Halep, 26, is the world number one but was still hunting a first grand slam title, four years after her first appearance in the final at Roland Garros. Widely regarded as having played too defensively in her final defeat by Jelena Ostapenko 12 months ago, Halep was the aggressor in the early stages. But she could not break the defence of the composed Stephens and it was the American who secured the break for 3-1. But Halep, stung into action, levelled things up in the fourth game, breaking Stephens to love as the first chinks in the American's armour appeared. A hold to love meant Halep had hit eight unanswered points, and another break followed as Stephens' levels dipped for the first time in the match. But just as the set was slipping away from Stephens, a series of unforced errors by Halep gifted her the break back at 4-4.
Sloane Stephens led Simona Halep by a set and a break, but it was the Romanian who ultimately prevailed, and won her first Grand Slam title. Halep’s case also wasn’t being helped by her utter lack of faith in her net game. Repeatedly, she’d open up the court but refused to come in, instead giving Stephens the chance to reset the point with high balls and even a number of mildly sliced forehands. Until early in the second set, Halep was looking like a terribly limited player. But I think what paid off most of all was Halep’s dedication, tenacity and fitness.
