Call Rafael Nadal the King of Clay if you choose, but the numbers say that is a vast understatement.  Roger Federer might have more Grand Slam wins than Rafael Nadal, but that hardly makes the Swiss the GOAT. EPA/MAST IRHAM. Facebook. Twitter. Facebook Messenger. Email. Jun 14, 2018.

Nadal's initial reaction, while strong, was later tempered. But it's easy to see another reason Sharapova might side with the minority in the great GOAT debate. Like Nadal, she has a special place in her heart for the French Open. Nadal has enjoyed an astonishing, somewhat disproportionate degree of his success on the red clay at Roland Garros. He's won the title a mind-boggling 10 times there, earning the nickname King of Clay. It's a great honor, highlighting that clay is a unique surface.

Until when will Nadal and Federer be competitive? 'It's clear that the ones who are at the top want to be the best players in history. I understand that Federer wants to secure being the best of all time until when he plays and Nadal will try to win as many Major titles as possible to see if one day he can reach him. It makes the fight alive, postponing as much as possible the day when they will do other things. Pete Sampras won his 14th Grand Slam in the last tournament he played.

Nadal’s victory over Anderson probably shouldn’t change your outlook on the GOAT debate. But it does allow us to further question the conventional wisdom of Federer’s supremacy. And Nadal, in particular, has a great chance to fundamentally change the facts of the debate next season. Nadal leaves Flushing Meadows as a deserving World No. 1, with most of his top competition both at least 30 and injured. The stunning, mysterious decline of Novak Djokovic, who seemed destined to challenge Federer and Nadal’s all-time supremacy, left an unforeseen void in men’s tennis.

LONDON—Despite owning an 22-10 head-to-head record against Roger Federer, 13-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal says that he does not belong in the discussion for being the greatest player ever, saying that the accolade should either go to Federer or Rod Laver, who won the calendar-year Grand Slam both in 1962 and 1969. “I believe is 100 percent fair that people say [Federer is still the best ever] because he is today, and will be very difficult to any player to improve his numbers,” Nadal said. “Always say the same: Is not fair to analyze the history of any player only for the Grand Slams.

Nadal has a far superior head-to-head record than Federer, and if he ends up winning more majors then it would be game, set, and match when it comes to the GOAT status. Read all of Business Insider's Wimbledon coverage here. Roger Federer had a grand plan for the 2018 season, but it backfired spectacularly when he was knocked out of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships by world number eight Kevin Anderson. Federer skipped the entire clay season so he could be as fit and as fresh as possible for Wimbledon, a tournament he had won eight times before — a men's Open Era record.

By the numbers, Nadal has as strong of a case to be the GOAT as any male tennis player who ever lived, including Federer. Nadal's 17 major championship victories rank second on the all-time list, and he's first all-time with 32 career Master's 1000 victories. Nadal also has an Olympic gold medal. His credentials are sterling.  No GOAT candidate has ever been as dominant on any surface as Nadal is on clay. However, Nadal also has been successful enough on the other surfaces that he has a strong case as the best tennis player of all time. His success at majors outside of the French Open compares very favorably with anyone in the Open era -- including Federer.

As No. 1 Rafael Nadal fell to the soft clay and held back tears upon winning his ninth French Open title Sunday, the 27-year-old Spaniard entered rarified air with his 14th career slam title. Beating No. 2 Novak Djokovic for the sixth straight time at Roland Garros, while also retaining his ranking as the world’s best player, Nadal will now complicate the debate about who is the GOAT: greatest of all time. If the argument comes down to slams alone, Roger Federer walks away with the cherished moniker for now. But an argument can be made for others as well.

I'm a Federer fan but not an extreme fan so I think I can answer this fairly. I think Rafa has about 3 or 4 French Opens left in him before the effects of his physical game take over. During this time he may also win one or two other slams, but I think he may well equal Federer's current record, but it's whether Federer can increase his number before he retires which is the issue. I think Rafa will retire before or at the age of 30, so his time is limited for 17 or 18 slams.

He stands at 13 Majors, with Nadal - a year older than him - at 17, and Roger Federer at 20. If Djokovic is to go on yet another near-flawless run like he had in his record-breaking 2011, 2015 and 2016 seasons, he will come seriously close to his two senior competitors - in terms of Majors in his cabinet and many other performance parameters. So the GOAT debate in Open Era is well and truly back on track. Let us have a comprehensive look at the numbers and analyze the three as they stand now. AGE. 1. Novak Djokovic: 31 years 2 months. 2. Roger Federer may have 19 Grand Slam titles, but with his win at the US Open Rafael Nadal (with 16 titles) has re-opened the debate about who is the Greatest of All Time. After Wimbledon, I thought that the greatest of all time (GOAT) debate had been settled. Rafa’s win at the US Open has reignited it. He now has 16 Major titles, Roger 19, and there is no doubt that Rafa could potentially catch the Swiss. That has re-opened the GOAT debate.
