Rafael Nadal was the defending champion and successfully defended his title, defeating Dominic Thiem in the final, 6–4, 6–3, 6–2. Nadal equaled Margaret Court's all-time record of 11 Grand Slam singles titles won at one major and became the first player to achieve that feat in the Open era. He dropped only one set during the entire tournament (losing the first set of his quarterfinal match against Diego Schwartzman). Nadal also retained the ATP No. 1 singles ranking by defending the title. Nadal and

The 2018 French Open is over. Rafael Nadal is the men’s champion. What’s new?  Rafa Nadal has been in 10 French Open finals. He’s yet to lose one. He beat Mariano Puerto for his first in 2005 and since then he’s seen off Roger Federer four times, Novak Djokovic twice and Robin Soderling, David Ferrer and Stan Wawrinka, who was no match for him last year. Put it that way and you can be forgiven for feeling that Dominic Thiem might be better off staying in the locker room. A Nadal win today would see him equal Margaret Court’s record of 11 titles at one grand slam – the Australian’s came in the Australian Open and bridged the amateur and professional eras. Facebook. Coverage: Live radio and text commentary on BBC Radio 5 live, the BBC Sport website and app. The beauty about sport is we never know what might happen when we arrive at a stadium or turn on our television. But one thing comes as close to sporting certainty as anything else we have seen over the past 13 years: Rafael Nadal winning the French Open.  Borg won six French Open titles between 1974 and 1981, setting a record that stood until it was surpassed by Nadal in 2012. "I was around the era where I thought I was watching the greatest - I was at the time - Borg. Nadal eclipses him," said McEnroe, a Roland Garros finalist in 1984. Nadal's main weapon is that vicious, lasso-style forehand which has become his trademark.

Rafael Nadal has won the 2018 French Open, besting Dominic Thiem in the finals, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Nadal now has 11 titles on the clay of Roland Garros, tying Margaret Court for the most titles at any one Grand Slam and once again solidifying his claim as the King of Clay. Nadal, 32, has a whopping 86-2 record at the French Open after Sunday’s victory. Thiem, 24, is still searching for his first Grand Slam victory after the stinging loss, but it was the furthest he’s been in one yet, and he played a hard-fought match. Nadal joins Simona Halep as singles champions this year.
