Yet Juan Martin del Potro still has the ability to make Arthur Ashe Stadium roar—this time in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal. By S.L. Price. September 07, 2017.  Of course he smiled saying this: The now-familiar Mona Lisa grin, the head bowed because at 6’6” he’s used to talking down to people, the eyes half-lidded. As Nadal struggled against del Potro, it seemed as if general fatigue and lack of energy might cause his ouster. He said he did not sense a return of his chronic knee tendinitis on Thursday when he practiced, or warming up before the match. Nadal was able to compete through the end of the first-set tiebreaker, but in the second set, it was as if del Potro no longer had a real opponent.  He and Nadal have developed a respect for each other over their 17 head-to-head encounters, with Nadal holding an 11-5 advantage before Friday. But Nadal was so distraught after he pulled out of the match that he had difficulty saying he was pleased to see del Potro advance. “I cannot say I am happy, because I am not,” he said. “I will not lie to you. But yes, he is a player who went through a lot of issues during his career, like me, too. I know how tough is this thing.”

Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin go head-to-head in a keenly anticipated semi-final at the US Open on Friday in what will be the fourteenth meeting between the pair. Nadal cruised through the early stages of this rivalry, winning the first four matches without dropping a set, but del Potro was always getting better, and the giant Argentine made his move in 2009, winning three of the four reunions within that calendar year. Del Potro was just 20 when he won the US Open in 2009, and looked set for a long stay in the top of the sport, but unfortunately, he has been short-changed by injuries and surge
