Ion Iliescu was born in Oltenita, Romania, on March 3, 1930. His father was a railway worker who was active in the workers'(communist) movement prior to his death, at the age of 45, in the early 1950s. Ion Iliescu pursued advanced studies in the Soviet Union specializing in electro-technical engineering.  Iliescu's close association with Nicolae Ceausescu ended in 1971 when he was removed from the apparatus of the Central Committee following Ceausescu's criticism of Iliescu's liberal attitudes in matters cultural and ideological. It should be noted that the Romanian "cultural revolution" and ensuing neo-Stalinism identified with Ceausescu's "cult of personality" began in 1971 with an attack against policies and attitudes identified with Iliescu and other non-doctrinaire Communist leaders.

Probably for Stanculescu, certainly for Iliescu. We will never know why they felt obliged to kill him, probably he knew so much, that not only these guys, but also many western politicians felt unsafe. The trial was a circus. What I found most dis  Ceausescu had done a lot of harm to his people. But a fair trial was not only a necessity for a new start, it would a posteriori have helped also to understand how much was meanness and stupidity in the decisions of the presumed authocrate, and how much had been necessity and tough luck. Both coexisted, and we will never be able to distinguish on base of sufficient first hand information.

Ion Iliescu (Romanian pronunciation: [iˈon iliˈesku]; born March 3, 1930) served as President of Romania from 1990 until 1996, and from 2000 until 2004. From 1996 to 2000 and from 2004 until his retirement in 2008, Iliescu was a Senator for the Social Democratic Party (PSD), whose honorary president he remains.  However, in 1971, Ceaușescu felt threatened by Iliescu - as he was seen as Ceaușescu's heir apparent - and he was marginalized by and removed from all major political offices, being assigned vice-president of the Timiș County Council (1971–1974), and later president of the Iași Council (1974–1979). In 1984, he was excluded from the Central Committee, and until 1989 he was in charge of Editura Tehnică publishing house.[4] For most of the 1980s (if not before), he was tailed by the Securitate (secret police), as he was known to oppose Ceaușescu's harsh rule.[6].
