Nascut la 3 martie 1930, Ion Iliescu este casatorit din 1951, sotia sa Nina Iliescu (Elena Serbanescu - numele de fata, cu care s-a cunoscut in vremea studiilor liceale) fiind de profesie inginer, cercetator stiintific in domeniul coroziunii metalelor. Nu au copii.  La fel s-a intamplat in cazul mineriadei din 1990, cand presedintele de atunci Ion Iliescu a chemat minerii in Bucuresti ca sa reprime manifestarile protestatarilor antiguvermentali din Piata Universitatii. Anchetat in acest caz, Iliescu a primit NUP de la procurori. Ion Iliescu was born on 3 March 1930 in Oltenita, Romania. In 1953, he joined the Romanian Communist party and he quickly became one of its most prominent and influential members. He remained a member until 1971 when he was expelled by order of party leader Nicolae Ceausescu.  Between 13 and 15 June 1990, peaceful anti-government protesters were confronted by over 10’000 pro-government miners, and the protests were then violently repressed by governmental forces. During the demonstrations, known as the ‘Mineriad’, four people were killed, 1’388 were injured and 1’250 people were arbitrarily arrested. Allegedly, Iliescu called the minors of Valea Jiului, the country’s main coal basin, to go to Bucharest and pacify the “punks” and “thugs”. Ion Iliescu, 85, was president from 1990 until 1996 and then returned for a second term from 2000 to 2004. He was accused of murder in 2005. However, those charges were dropped two years later and he has always rejected the allegations against him as absurd.  Mr Iliescu made no comment in court as he appeared with other former government officials, including ex-intelligence director Virgil Magureanu and ex-Defence Minister Victor Atanasie Stanculescu. Months before he became president, Mr Iliescu helped bring down the Communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. However, when opposition protesters took to the streets to voice their anger against the new ex-Communist leadership, their demonstration was broken up by thousands of miners sent to Bucharest by Mr Iliescu to stage a counter-protest.

He joined the Communist Party in 1953, and became a member of the Central Committee in 1965, serving in various positions until Nicolae Ceauşescu was overthrown in 1989. Iliescu was the elected President of Romania for eleven years (three terms), from 1990 to 1992, 1992 to 1996, and 2000 to 2004. His first and second terms were separated from the third term by the presidency of Emil Constantinescu.  The PSD was one of several parties formed after the breakup of the National Salvation Front, in the early 1990s. Ion Iliescu has decided not to participate in the November 30, 2008 election as a candidate for a new four year parliamentary position, but he's still remaining a prominent figure of the party he founded. Iliescu is widely recognized as the predominant figure in the first fifteen years of post-1989 Romanian Revolution politics.
