Why have the start times changed? F1's new owners, Liberty Media, believe moving the start-time of races to 10 minutes past the hour will improve experience of TV viewers. According to the Formula 1 authorities: 'Some broadcasters usually go on air precisely on the hour, hence missing the tension and emotion that characterize the minutes before the start of each Grand Prix. Thanks to this change, television viewers will be brought closer to the teams and the drivers and fully enjoy the spectacle offered just before the red lights go out.' Fangio was, until Michael Schumacher won seven titles, the man with the most and the 1950s champion remains revered as possibly the greatest driver of all time and certainly of his deadly era. "He's the godfather for us, one of the greats from the beginning and will always be admired in the sport," the Briton said.

Formula 1 bosses have decided to press ahead with the introduction of a new elimination-style qualifying system from the start of the season. The idea was voted through unchanged on Friday by the world council of F1's governing body the FIA. It means the system will be used for the first time at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on 19 March. The World Council has decided to ignore suggestions for tweaks to avoid an empty track at the end of qualifying. Williams team principal Claire Williams earlier confirmed it will happen in Melbourne.

Formula One writer Gianluca D'Alessandro praised the temperament showcased by Vettel in this victory: Gianluca D'Alessandro @Gianludale27. Good race for Seb, especially after the VSC. Well managed, without any mistakes, despite Hamilton's pressure from behind. That's what a champion does. Still some work to do to improve the feeling with the car, but it's a good starting point ☝️ #AusGP #Vettel. The former Red Bull driver has enjoyed a remarkable career, and this weekend will see him involved in a Formula One grand prix for the 200th time.  Between the two—who were fourth and sixth, respectively—was Fernando Alonso, who produced a brilliant drive for McLaren. As noted by F1 writer Ed Foster, positive results have been scarce lately for the two-time world champion: Ed Foster @AnotherEdFoster. Fernando Alonso's F1 record makes for depressing reading, doesn't it?

Pictured above is a timer we recently built for a customer which will be used in a Formula 1 style race start lighting gantry. This gantry will be fitted at the top of a slope with toy cars held by a small gate latched up by a small solenoid with a spring loaded core. When the race is to start, the solenoid is energised which drops the gate allowing the cars to roll down the slope in their race.  Then, when all five LEDs are illuminated, there is a random time interval of between 1 and 3 seconds before all the LEDs are turned off. The lights turning off indicates that the race is to start. The buzzer sounds for 1 second, while the on board relay energises for 1 second to energise the solenoid and start the race. If you need any kind of bespoke timer or controller, please email neil@reuk.co.uk with details of your requirements. Posted in arduino, projects, timers | Leave a comment. Bookmark the permalink.

Liberty Media is targeting a larger global television audience with the latest change. February 1, 2018.  The latest Liberty Media change to Formula 1 will come to the benefit of viewers in the Americas. Many European events will now start at 3:10 p.m. local time this season, meaning they will also start at 9:10 a.m. in the Eastern time zone. While the reason to make the changes wasn’t completely intended to benefit the United States, attracting a larger global audience certainly was. Moving to the later time slot are the Spanish, Monaco, Austrian, British, German, Hungarian, Belgian and Italian Grands Prix between May and September. Also of note is that all races will now start at 10 minutes past
