Formula 1 bosses have decided to press ahead with the introduction of a new elimination-style qualifying system from the start of the season. The idea was voted through unchanged on Friday by the world council of F1's governing body the FIA. It means the system will be used for the first time at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on 19 March. The World Council has decided to ignore suggestions for tweaks to avoid an empty track at the end of qualifying. Williams team principal Claire Williams earlier confirmed it will happen in Melbourne. "The Strategy Group voted it through an
There are six races remaining in the 2018 season and for some drivers, the qualifying comparisons with their team-mates are not pretty. Kimi Raikkonen, Daniel Ricciardo and Stoffel Vandoorne, in particular, will be unhappy with their year's work on Saturdays. They'll hope for an improvement at this weekend's Russian GP, and ahead of that race, Sky F1 have collated all the qualifying scores and race head to heads. Lewis Hamilton is leading the championship and also holds a commanding advantage over Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas - currently a whopping 110 points ahead of the

How does qualification in Formula One work exactly? “In the first phase of qualifying – called Q1 – all the drivers have 18 minutes to go out on the track and set their fastest times. At the end of that period, the slowest six cars are eliminated, and the remaining 18 cars go through to the next phase. This part of qualifying is particularly interesting because all the cars have to start the race on the tyres that they set their best time on during this session. At the end of Q2, another six cars are eliminated and the fastest cars go through to the top 10 shoot-out. “The drivers go head-to-head in another 12-minute session called Q3 – usually each car will try to set two fastest laps.
The shape of qualifying in Formula 1 could look very different from next year, after it was claimed that Saturday action could be split into four sessions. Auto Motor und Sport have reported that Liberty Media plans to add a Q4 to qualifying as early as 2019. Qualifying is currently split into three sections, five drivers dropping out in Q1 and Q2 respectively before Q3 decides the order of the top 10, and pole position with it. AMuS have reported that Q4 will decide the top eight drivers and pole position, but the make-up of the remaining sessions is yet to be determined.
