Today was probably the most exciting day of the 2018 Australian Open so far, with quite a few thrilling contests. To begin with, we saw 6-time champion and #14 seed Novak Djokovic being ousted by 21-year old Hyeon Chung. Chung was unseeded and still managed to beat the champion.  Roger Federer and ladies top seed Simona Halep had no issues in progressing to their quarter finals berths as well but it was a tough game for Dominic Thiem, who lost in 5 sets to the unseeded Tennys Sandgren. Peak Challenge pic.twitter.com/cRm1amHOOS. — Ilya Ryvlin (@ryvlin) January 22, 2018. The best game of the night was undoubtedly the one between Karolina Pliskova & Barbora Strycova. The latter won the first set but Pliskova came back strong in what turned out to be a 2.5 hour exhibition of classy tennis. Strycova laboured hard but wasn’t able to overpower Pliskova.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Six-time champion Novak Djokovic, 2017 winner Roger Federer and 2016 champion Angelique Kerber will look to book quarterfinal spots on Day 8 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park. Federer has an afternoon match Monday on Rod Laver Arena against former top-ranked junior Marton Fucsovics, while Djokovic plays a fourth-round night match against Hyeon Chung. Kerber takes on Hsieh Su-Wei. Djokovic and Federer could meet in the semifinals. Under mostly sunny skies, 2017 U.S. Open finalist Madison Keys opened play at Rod Laver Arena against eighth-seeded Caroline Garcia

Here’s your three to see for the second half of fourth-round action on day 8 of the Australian Open.  Countrywomen and former Fed Cup doubles partners, the two have been feuding since October of last year, after Strycova’s coach of two years, Tomas Krupa, defected to Pliskova’s camp for the 2018 season. Now they get a chance to hash it out on the tennis court, and the expectation is that things get heated.

Sloane Stephens crashed out of the Australian Open in a first round defeat to Shuai Zhang. The US Grand Slam champion suffered her eighth consecutive loss when she was dismissed 6-2, 6-7 (2), 2-6 in Melbourne. It was a challenging draw for Stephens, currently ranked 13th, to go up against the Chinese 28-year-old, who at 34th, was just outside the seed. The 24-year-old has struggled to rediscover the form that carried her to victory over fellow American Madison Keys at the US Open in September.  A pep talk from Roger Federer helped inspire Belinda Bencic to a major upset on the opening day of the Australian Open. The 20-year-old came into the tournament in great form and knocked out last year’s runner-up Venus Williams 6-3, 7-5. She prepared for the year’s first grand slam by teaming up with Federer to represent Switzerland at the Hopman Cup, with the pair going on to lift the trophy.

Roger Federer will play during the day for the first time at the 2018 Australian Open when he takes on Marton Fucsovics in the fourth round. The Swiss has only featured in night sessions on the Rod Laver Arena throughout the event thus far – avoiding the sizzling Melbourne heat – but will now be involved during the day. His match with the Hungarian will follow Madison Keys against Caroline Garcia and Angelique Kerber’s tie with Hsieh Su-Wei. More: Tennis. Federer thought the reason why he had been so emotional after the final was because he had got to the final “very quickly” with the retirement of Chung in the semi-finals and his straight-sets victories in the previous five rounds. “I had a lot of emotions left in me because I didn't have to go to the extremes like I did last year against Kei Nishikori and Stan [Wawrinka],” Federer said, referring to the fact that he played three five-set matches en route to the title 12 months ago.

Australian Open 2018 got underway on Monday recording huge upsets in the men’s and women’s singles. The biggest of them all was Venus Williams failing to match or surpass last year’s result and the wait for her 8th Grand Slam title as well as a title in Melbourne continues. Last season’s losing finalist, Williams crashed out to world number 78 Belinda Bencic 6-3 7-5.
