Arsenal qualify for Europa League last-32 despite defeat in Cologne | The Independent

Arsenal were perhaps unlucky to lose this game, which they dominated in terms of possession and chances, without quite threatening as much as they should.  So this was still a night of raucous celebration for them. If they win in Belgrade in two weeks’ time they can still qualify for the last-32. Which, for a fan-base so starved of European football, is nothing trivial. The first half, it must be said, was not a classic. The FC Koln fans were exceptional, providing exactly the special atmosphere Per Mertesacker predicted in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon. For them this was a big match, hosting Arsenal after so long out of Europe. The noise belied the low stakes of the game itself. Jack Wilshere failed to assert his influenc

Arsenal have qualified for the last 32 of the Europa League. Having won their first three matches in Group H, Arsene Wenger's side needed only one more win to be assured of their passage into the knockout rounds. Red Star Belgrade, much like two weeks ago, proved tough opposition and enjoyed the better of the first half before holding back a late Gunners surge for a share of the spoils.  James Benge. Atletico Madrid have qualified for this year’s Europa League final after beating Arsenal 1-0 on Thursday night. The Los Rojiblancos drew 1-1 last week in England and were favourites going into the leg at the Wanda Metropolitano. Diego Costa’s 53rd minute strike where he held off the challenge of Hector Bellerin to coolly slot past goalkeeper David Ospina was the only goal of the night in the Spanish capital as Diego Simeone’s men qualified for the final with a 2-1 aggregate. Meanwhile, in the other semi-finals match, Marseille knocked out Salzburg to qualify for the final slated for May 16 in

Arsenal are through to the quarter-final of the Europa League, after a 3-1 win over AC Milan on Thursday night in London. The Gunners gave themselves a big chance of qualification, after winning the first leg 2-0 at the San Siro last week. However, it was the Serie A side that took the lead at the Emirates, with Hakan Calhanoglu unleashing a fierce drive past David Ospina. The home side equalized before the break, with Danny Welbeck slotting home a controversial penalty. Arsene Wenger’s men scored two more goals through Welbeck and Granit Xhaka, to take the tie beyond Milan. Borussia Dortmund

Arsenal continues their quest for Europa League glory on Thursday when they take on AC Milan at the Emirates in the second leg of their last-16 tie. The Gunners come into the game in north London boasting two away goals, having won 2-0 in Italy, and they will be aiming to ensure they do not forfeit their lead. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey struck in the first half at San Siro to grant Arsene Wenger some reprieve and they followed that up with a 3-0 win over Watford on Sunday. Arsenal will qualify for the quarter final in Europa league | Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey struck in the first half at San Siro

Arsenal qualified for the UEFA Europa League knockout stages after running out a bore draw against Red Star Belgrade at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening. Manager Arsene Wenger again made great changes to his side for the European clash, and while his side were far from impressive, one point combined with Cologne's 5-2 victory over BATE Borisov was enough to advance. The Gunners will have had one eye on Sunday's trip to face Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with few of Thursday's participants likely to challenge for a starting place. Arsenal through in Europa League, Everton knocked out - Live - BBC Sport

Arsenal face a fixture headache this summer if they finish seventh in the Premier League, due to their potential involvement in both the Europa League and International Champions Cup. If Burnley finish above Arsenal in seventh and Southampton do not win the FA Cup, the Premier League's allocated Europa League spots will drop to seventh place, with that club entering at the second qualifying stage. The first leg of that stage is on July 26, the same day Arsenal are due to play in Singapore in the International Champions Cup against Atletico Madrid.  Arsenal are also scheduled to play PSG in Singapore on July 28, with the Europa League second qualifying stage second leg scheduled for August 2. Arsenal will also go in at the second qualifying stage if they finish sixth and Southampton win the FA Cup.
