Alex Knapp , Forbes Staff I write about the future of science, technology, and culture. One of the best things about the widespread adoption of the internet and social media has been the ability of scientists to share their research quickly.  "Academic and scientific discourse is mediated by paper supremacy. Over the last ten years, the landscape has changed to the point that most academics review research online," Academia.edu co-founder Richard Price explained to me on the phone. "But what hasn’t caught up is a way to measure the impact of research uploaded online. We're in the middle of a fascinating transition in science to being a web-native form of communication."

He defends the benefits of his platform for scholars by pointing to research which, he says, shows that uploading a paper to Academia.edu generates significantly more citations than uploading to a personal homepage. “We believe this is because of the increased exposure the paper gets by being on a network, and because of the 35 million people who visit the site each month looking for papers,” writes Dr. Price.  “I think what they are really looking for is trend analysis for venture capital companies who are looking at which way the wind is blowing so that they can speculatively buy batteries of patents or research programs around particular areas.”  If we look at Twitter and the blogging world as an analogy with Academia.edu and researchers, Twitter had a huge ramp up starting in 2008 and helped bloggers obtain eyeballs/readers, but where is it now?

Some academics remain skeptical of Academia.edu | University Affairs

As it turns out, publishing giant Elsevier is taking down copyrighted papers from Academia.edu. Here’s a bit of background. For-profit publishing companies (like Elsevier, Sage, Taylor & Francis etc.) make authors sign a copyright agreement when they publish in the journals run by these companies.  These publishers boast that their journals house the most innovative and world-shattering research. This is why the journals are so valuable. And in the same breath, they argue that this information should be restricted from the general public—unless, of course, that public is willing to pay exorbitant fees.  I see academia.edu's latest move as part of an increasing trend to directly compete with rather than supplement the offerings of publishers. They're no longer acting as a gateway to those publications by a user published elsewhere.

A trending papers algorithm would tell an R&D company which are the most impactful papers in a given research area in the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or any time period. Historically it’s been very difficult to get this kind of data. Scientists have printed papers out, and read them in their labs in un-trackable ways. As scientific activity is moving online, it’s becoming easier to track which papers are getting more attention from the top scientists.  That’s because for the likes of Google, Twitter and Academia.edu free content is what for-profit technology empires are built on. In this world who gate-keeps access to (and so can extract maximum value from) content is less important, because that access is already free, than who gate-keeps (and so can extract maximum value from) the data generated around the use of that content, which is used more because access to it is free.
