Global megatrends are macroeconomic and geostrategic forces that are shaping our world, and our collective futures in profound ways. The implications of these forces are broad and varied, and they will present us with both tremendous opportunities to seize—as well as extremely dangerous risks to mitigate. China’s greater assertiveness beyond its territorial waters and its investments in a more comprehensive force projection capabilities will challenge the traditional balance of forces in the region. 3 Increasing disruptive relevance of North Korea. Dire economic conditions and unpredictable leadership employing bellicose language and actions will contribute to regional instability. As part of Citi’s strategy, the company has identified 150 cities it believes will shape the world in coming years8. It is active in 80% of them and plans to enter the rest.
In terms of the megatrends seen in 2017, activism is as strong as it’s ever beenPexels. Activist shareholders have deployed $45 billion in new campaigns year to date, nearly double the amount for all of 2016. That figure highlights several key shareholder activism trends cited in a recent Lazard report. Elliott is a multi-strategy hedge fund that has launched 12 campaigns globally in 2017, largely focusing on event-driven catalysts such as M&A and changes to corporate structure. Trian and ValueAct, by comparison, have geared their campaigns more towards operational improvements and have focused on targets in the U.S., with ValueAct occasionally pursuing U.K. targets as well. The report also highlights that 2017 has seen activism go global. Says Rossman, "allocation of activist capital to global companies is a major takeaway.
The World Economic Forum City Competitiveness Report identifies six global megatrends that are likely to determine how well cities do in the future. 1: Urbanization, demographics and the emerging middle class. People have moved from the countryside to cities for millennia, but never before have urban spaces grown at the speed and scale they are today. Ageing will also be a key trend in global demographics. By 2050, one in every five people will be at least 60 years old. The overall ratio of old to young is set to almost double from current levels. 2: Rising inequality. It is up to cities to take advantage of these megatrends, as well as to mitigate negative forces such as rising inequality, pressure on natural resources and the environment, and a diminution of trust in public authorities. The question now is how cities can adapt to these challenges and continue to prosper.

By the end of the year, 68.5 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, or generalized violence. UNHCR collects statistics on displaced populations to help find long-term solutions for the people who are forced to leave their homes. This doesn’t necessarily mean returning to their origin country but also includes voluntary repatriation, resettlement to a third country and local integration. In 2017, Colombia remained the country with the largest IDP population in the world.
